Starting Over, chapter 3 by Soviet-Superwoman Starting Over, chapter 3 by Soviet-Superwoman

A small Fourth Reich bunker/launch facility outside Angel Falls
USA

---

Hermann von Trotha, the Iron Chancellor, gazed out in the direction of Angel Falls. From here, more than 20 miles away, the city looked only like a gleaming dot on the horizon. It was still an impressive sight, despite the fact that he now viewed the world through a series of sensors and internal holographic displays. He looked it over for a moment more, making final calculations before turning back around to the host gathered there. Ilsa Hauppman was here, this time dressed in her full black leather uniform, a look of smoldering anger on her countenance. Best to not let her out of his sight as much as possible. Obersturmbannfuhrer Holt was here as well, wetting her nervous lips with her tongue. Her loyalty was being tugged internally between her fear of her former mistress and the promise of new technological wonders under her new master. Their was a hostility in the air that was deliciously palpable. A few members of the Fourth Reich's science division moved about the control room, checking and double-checking data on various computer monitors. There was a light security presence, mostly men brought in by von Trotha to keep an eye on the woman who called herself Genocide. The Iron Chancellor brought up his internal chronometer and found the time acceptable.

"Everything is proceeding exactly on schedule. Your science team is a model of efficiency Obersturmbannfuhrer Holt, you should be proud." his electronic voice seeming louder in the small chamber.

"Thank you sir." Holt replied quickly, her eyes darting from her seemingly new commander to her previous one.

Von Trotha glanced over at Ilsa and would have frowned had he lips to do so. "Come now Ilsa, this is going to be a great victory for our organization."

"My organization von Trotha." Genocide hissed.

The Iron Chancellor dismissed her current bout of short-sighted fury with a wave of his hand. "Regardless, this will strike a blow that will ensure the survival of the organization and lay to rest a great deal of our future concerns regarding the meta-human population of this shining capitalist monument. All I require from you are the codes to arm the nuclear warhead my dear Reichsführer."

"And if I refuse to provide them?"

The Iron Chancellor took a few steps in her direction. Defiantly Ilsa stood her ground, glaring up into the plastisteel dome that encased his brain with her azure eyes.

"I know that in this form Ilsa you are as vulnerable to damage as any other human being. Your crippling and imprisonment at the hands of Olga's lesbisch lover are a testament to it. I won't kill you Ilsa, rather I will have your Red Doktor partially lobotomize you into a drooling invalid and that is the form I will keep you in forever. Now, you will release the codes to me. I can discover them on my own, of course, but that would take time and I am on a tight schedule."

Genocide stared at him for a moment more before smirking and relaxing her stance. "Very well, why not? I always wanted deep down to unleash a nuclear hell in the heart of that city."

"We will not be firing this warhead into the city."

At that Ilsa looked puzzled for a moment. "If not into Angel Falls, then why..."

"We will be firing it towards the Atlantic Ocean, a few miles from the city to air-burst above it. No chance for any would-be heroes to intercept it and the results will be more agonizing. Did I ever tell you about the details of the would-be invasion of Normandy my dear Ilsa? Of course not, we were never on the best of speaking terms and in those days things were happening so quickly...before either of us acquired new and more powerful forms. We have a few moments so indulge me if you will."

"Do I have a choice?" Genocide said with a sardonic grin.

"When I was put in charge of the Atlantic defenses and Rommel was suddenly sent north to Calais I realized two things," the Chancellor began, "The first being that the attack was coming and it would not be there and the second was that Rommel could no longer be trusted. It was a clever ruse on the Allies part, or perhaps they had simply played to the general's anti-Nazi sympathies. Part of me even suspected that they might have somehow broken my Enigma machine, however unlikely that was. In any event, tactically Normandy and the surrounding beaches meant shorter supply lines than a second front up through the Balkans, the sand had the right type and texture to be able to support the weight of tanks and the tides were correct for it. I digress...the point is that when they invaded I was ready for them with chemical warfare. V-1 and V-2 rockets descended carrying a deadly form of mustard gas. Soon the beaches were blanketed with a thick, yellow fog that choked the life out of the unprepared marines. My troops and tanks could have moved in at any time and finished them off but I chose to wait. After a time the choking, the moans and screaming began as the survivors of the initial strikes began to try to escape the gas, stumbling, struck blind by the gas. Some drowned in the Atlantic carried to the bottom by their heavy packs and equipment, others shot themselves outright...but most clung to life despite the horrific conditions. They cried out of their mothers and shit themselves. Their cries could be heard all the way out to the ships that had brought them there, to the ears of their commanders and comrades. Morale was destroyed utterly. Spirits were broken. After that I moved in with my soldiers and so ended the so-called Second Front."

"What will happen to Angel Falls will be similar in every way. Your precious warhead will detonate and bathe the nearby city in deadly radiation and fallout from the blast being so close. Effects vary from rapid death following high doses of penetrating whole-body radiation, to essentially normal lives for a variable period of time until the development of delayed radiation effects, in a portion of the exposed population, following lower dose exposures. Some of those possible delayed consequences of radiation are life shortening, carcinogenesis, cataract formation, chronic radiodermatitis, decreased fertility, and genetic mutations. In short I will make certain that the city is slowly, agonizing choked to death by radiation. No one knows you had this weapon so there will be no one to retaliate against. The bulk of our forces are out of the city, but a token force has been left to maintain the illusion of our presence. Morale will be destroyed utterly. Spirits broken. Heroes will die."

Ilsa clapped her black, leather-clad hands together slowly. "Bravo Herr von Trotha and thank you for an insightful story, but if I recall we still ended up losing the struggle. In the end the Allied forces, with their damned Soviet Superwoman, were still triumphant...and she shattered your body for it."

"She has no idea I am even in this dimension," the Iron Chancellor snapped, "and she is of little consequence. She will not know who launched the weapon since we are firing it from here, so short a distance from the city in an unmarked location and by the time they do figure out where it was shot from we will be long gone, back in Berlin to begin working on the next phase in my operation. Even if her biology allows her to survive the radiation, she will have to watch everyone she loves become exposed and die painfully. She will be broken Ilsa."

"We are ready to launch Mein Herr." one of the Science Division spoke up, standing and grinning like a maniac.

"Excellent!" , roared von Trotha, "You have full permission to launch...that is if Reichsführer Hauppman would be kind enough to provide the codes. Genocide...live up to your name my dear."

Ilsa Hauppman straightened her tunic and cleared her voice before addressing the scientist. "Nacht und Nebel."

The man in the lab-coat nodded and hurriedly typed in the command words, unlocking the full potential of the warhead. Von Trotha turned and strode over to the console next to the scientist, who took a step back and gave him a wide berth.

"Rest in Peace Angel Falls." the Iron Chancellor spoke as he depressed the final button in the launch sequence.

From their vantage point behind plastisteel windows, those gathered in the bunker watched as the rocket roared to life and blasted out over the ocean. After what seemed like an eternity the sky outside was suddenly consumed in a bright, blinding-white light. Everyone sans the cybernetic leader of the Reich were forced to cover their eyes with their hands. After several seconds this light slowly started to fade, allowing them to recover their eyesight. In the distance, rising majestically into the air, is a gigantic rolling, mushroom cloud. The column from the ocean surface is glowing orange like a billowing fire, rising and disappearing into the mushroom's head, which is a hideous purple color. The size of the cloud makes the Atlantic look suddenly very small, even as far away as they are. The waters are boiling all around it and it has whipped up a terrible rainstorm that has descended on the nearby city. Thick black, radioactive rain and radioactive ash fall from the quickly darkening sky.

A single tear of joy rolled down Ilsa Hauppman's cheek and she could almost hear their screams.

To be continued...

I imagine that in the original timeline of R.I.P. Angel Falls, Polygirl and other geniuses developed a way of getting rid of the radiation, since the the city was still there when Hauppman staged her attack.

On a serious note this would draw other heroes and the Nuclear authorities cf Broken Arrow and Sum of All Fears (films).
They can identify materials and even identify a specific bomb.

Damn.....

Doesn't he realize bathing the city in radiation is likely to create dozens of new mutant heroes?

The image made me think "Ooh, that's not good...", then Von Trotha's long and thorough descriptions only confirmed that.

Von Trotha also said Olga wil be forced to watch her loved ones suffer and die around her, and for the most part he's right, but I'd be surprised if Walkiria (the one whose suffering/death would devastate her most) was affected by the radiation, what with her not really having a human body anymore.

:bulletblue::bulletblack:Jack Matthews:bulletblack::bulletblue: Another day in fu**in' paradise. Good thing this thing has a radiation shield. Everyone else should start to evacuate to a safe zone a set up a DE-CON area.

Well... that was unexpected, partly because I missed the story where Ilsa got those materials and partly because I didn't think he'd make so dramatic a move... I think you might have tipped your hand with that though, such broad and dramatic consequences imply this is an otherverse-type story...

One possible flaw in this nasty little plan. Feel free to hide my comment if it gives away any spoilers but the trade winds generally will blow from the west towards the east taking the radiation away from Angel Falls where it would most likely dissipate harmlessly. Unless IC waited until the winds were blowing in the opposite direction, his plan will not reach fruition.
