Book II: Seeing Reds, SSW vs. Walkiria

"Maia! MAIA!"

O.D.I.N.s voice echoed inside her ears as the former marine came to in a daze. She was rocketing downwards towards the earth at an incredible speed, little more than green and red blur shooting through the azure sky. She shook her head a few times from side to side in an attempt to shake off the disorientation and focus. What had happened? Everything was cloudy. Her head felt like it had been worked over by a jackhammer and she had a dry, cotton-like feeling in her mouth. O.D.I.N. was still trying to get her attention, his voice sounding more than little panicked. Other than her name she couldn't make out what he was saying. Maia opened her mouth to say something, but only a throaty noise uttered forth. She was spinning out of control and continuing her rapid descent downwards. One of her gloved hands made it's way to the side of her temple, her fingers crawling across her forehead. The headache she was feeling made her nauseous. She had to focus...had to pull herself together. Olga had hit her...hard. She had gone up after that satellite and Olga had intercepted her...attacked her. Her wife had sent her plummeting like a stone to the Earth. Maia quickly tapped the side of her visor and brought up a display of where she was, even as her body had begun to glow with a violet haze so she could summon her own ability to fly. The red-haired heroine's eyes opened wide as she saw her velocity and distance from the ground, only seconds before she impacted with it.

The city of London shook around the area of Whitehall as Walkiria slammed into the concrete, throwing up large chunks of debris and a cloud of dust. Car alarms went off and windows shattered all around her for about half a block. Maia had landed on her back and the force of her collision with the ground had momentarily stunned her a second time. When she came to moments later, after what felt like an eternity in slow motion, her entire body felt numb and had she still been capable of breathing she was sure both of her lungs would have had the wind knocked out of them. Her heads up display showed she had been knocked out of the upper atmosphere and come down about 3,400 miles from her target bearing north-west. O.D.I.N. was still trying to get her attention as she shifted painfully, sitting up. Another object was moving in fast towards her position from the south-east. It had to be Olga. Maia spit out a bitter-tasting mouthful of grit and watched the skies. That crazy bitch! She had taken this too far, even someone as dense as she had to see that now. Verbal arguments were one thing...assaulting the person she loved most in the world supposedly was another thing altogether. Maia reached up and shut O.D.I.N. off in mid sentence. There wasn't anything he could add to this anymore. Olga had gone and made this confrontation physical and she would damn well surrender this damn fool crusade of hers...or Maia would be forced to take her out as a threat to American security. That satellite looked like a weapon and as such it could be considered a threat to national security. Something they could throw Olga under the bus for if they ever fired it, not to mention whatever destructive capabilities it might have that she would be responsible for. Maia wouldn't have any of those live on her head, even if that meant beating Olga within and inch of hers.

The Communist heroine came into view hovering downwards, her red cape billowing behind her (like a train of blood Maia thought). The black-haired heroine wore a stoney expression as she looked down at her wife.

"Stay down Maia." she said in a low-tone, obviously holding back a flood of emotion.

"You sucker-punched me. Coward." Maia spat. "You fight just like a Commie."

"You forced my hand when you went after the satellite."

"Fuck you Olga, why won't you think for a god-damned minute! Your Soviet Union...your Russia is long fucking gone. It's over. Done with. Swept into the dust-bin of history. You are nothing more than a relic. A dinosaur from the past desperately trying to find use in this world...and you did, in Angel Falls. You just keep letting these Russian bastards wave a carrot in your face and you do exactly what they tell you to, like you've been mentally conditioned by the State."

"Nyet, I know what I am doing. I am not trying to relive the past I am trying to put it behind me and move forward, towards a new future with the country I have been at odds with for too long."

Maia stood up to her full impressive height and spread her arms wide as she spoke. "By punching me in the face? By setting up a satellite that for all you know isn't any different than the one we stopped Ultrawoman from activating so many years ago. Innocent people might be killed you naive imbecile! Innocent people, like that guy you fried in that concentration camp during the war."

"You don't know that!" Olga snarled, no longer keeping up the facade of being emotionless to what was happening. "You won't give them a chance, you won't give me a chance!"

"The risk is too high Olga. Why won't they show us the blueprints together? Why aren't they meeting with you on Russian soil? Why is everything so cloak and dagger? It's a weapon Olga, and they found someone just stupid enough to help them aim it for them. You have sucker written all over you."

"Nikola..." Olga began before Maia cut her off.

"Who the fuck is Nikola? You don't know this asshole anymore than you know Nicholas Cage and you're taking him at his word because he told you it was true? Dammit Olga listen to yourself!"

The muscular woman with the hammer and sickle emblem emblazoned on her chest landed and strode over towards her lover angrily. "You do not know him either. You are making a presumption..."

Maia hovered out of the crater she had previously been lying in and took a few steps towards the body-builder sized woman, shaking her head. "This is futile. I'm arguing with someone whose mentor once said 'A single death is a tragedy; a million deaths is a statistic'."

"That is not fair to throw up in my face!" Olga barked back, "You do not know if the Stalin I knew was the same as the monster you had here."

"Judging by your actions and attitude today, I wouldn't be surprised if he executed every 'criminal' he told you to round up and you did it like an obedient lap-dog. He just had to say it with an honest looking face and a smile. Face it honey, you were a willing executioner and that's what these Russians are hoping for."

It had the desired effect Maia had hoped it would. The enraged Soviet Superwoman rushed towards her with a growl, her right arm rearing back to strike again. This time Maia was ready. She quickly dodged to the left of the clumsy, fury-fueled swing and countered with a tremendous body-blow of her own, right into Olga's solar plexus. The big woman doubled over, clutching at her chest and taking deep breaths. Maia took a step to the side and assumed a defensive fighting stance. She could finish her with a few more surgically-precise shots, but deep down she still wanted Olga to see reason on her own. This had already escalated far beyond the point that it should have.

"Olga, if I have to put you down to save lives I will, for your own good. This is the last time," she yelled at her wife with tears finally swelling in the corners of her eyes, "stand down or I will be forced to stop you physically."

To be continued...

This is a great relationship...I mean the way they talk to each other you would think they are enemies and not even married. I wonder how they will even move on with each other if they do manage to make it to a stalemate.
