Book II: Seeing Reds, SSW vs. Walkiria.

Second Wednesday of the Month.

"You agreed to what?" the heroine known as Walkiria exclaimed, more than a bit taken aback.

"As I told you," her spouse the Soviet Superwoman began for the second time, "I will be..."

"No I heard you," Maia interrupted her, "I just can't believe you said you'd help those people."

Olga's folded her powerful arms across her chest, narrowing her eyes. "Those people, as you say it like that, are also my people."

"No, those people have tried to kill you more than once, dislike your marital preference and have proven time and time again they can't be trusted. We already had this talk, when you decided to go patrolling around with the Siberian Guardsman. How well did that work out Olga?"

The Soviet Superwoman exhaled loudly, doing her best to keep her temper in check. She was thinking back on that situation as she had been when she met with Nikola, in fact it was one of the things that made her trust him. The Siberian Guardsman had been completely honest with her as well, talking plainly and genuinely making an attempt to reunite her with her people and work towards mending relations. It had been the other members of his squad that decided to take action into their own hands in that instance, as Maia very well knew. The Guardsman had been put into critical condition defending her from his own men. She had promised him at the time that she would not let that incident harden her heart towards Mother Russia and that she would continue trying for a reconciliation, like the very opportunity Nikola had approached her with.

"He was a good man," Olga finally continued in a low voice, "and I believe Nikola is as well."

"Why? Because he told you he was? Olga you can't afford to go through life being this naive."

Olga could feel her red flushing red as her anger level continued to rise. "I am trying to correct a mistake that I made, I attacked them first, remember?"

"Of course I remember and I remember you weren't completely in your right mind and I seem to remember Dark Star and a few others being involved and more than that I remember you going out of your way all these years to make up for it. All they've done is tried to have you killed and here you go, marching into the mouth of the beast to give them another chance."

"I can take care of myself." Olga snapped, "I am not a child."

Maia leaned in and stuck her finger directly in Olga's face. "But it will be my responsibility to come flying in and save your ass when this goes sour, which it will. Probably just what they want right now, an international incident they can pin on two lesbians and here you are ready to go and hand it to them. Why don't we go to Olympic games afterwards and show support."

Now the Soviet super-soldier did snarl back, her anger becoming harder and harder to keep in check. "I do not have to ask your permission to do this. I came by here for courtesy to let you know what I was doing, not eat this load of bull-craps from you."

Walkiria shook her head and chuckled, her voice taking a condescending tone. "Olga, sweetie, how do you even know this satellite isn't some kind of weapon? At best they are using you to set up some kind of orbital cannon and at worst they fire it on you moments after you put it up there and smile for the cameras."

"It is a risk I am willing to accept." Olga replied curtly.

"Without thinking about any of the countless consequences...typical." Maia responded, "You know if you really wanted to be buddy-buddy with Russia maybe you should have changed their collective minds when you had the power to a few weeks back."

Olga's eyes flashed open and her jaw dropped. For a moment she was taken completely off-guard by her wife's comment. When she finally found her voice her anger had finally slipped it's leash. "Как вы смеете!" she spat at her with her native tongue before catching herself and switching back over to her accented English, "How dare you!"

"How dare I what, you selfish..." Walkiria caught herself just shy from calling her a name of some kind and paused before continuing, "You are so God-damned selfish! You had all the powers in the world and did nothing and I didn't say anything. You could have stabilized my powers Olga! Do you realize what they would have meant for me, the woman who married you and has stuck by you and that you supposedly love! You could have helped your friends, the people you care about and...nothing. You didn't do a damned thing. So when you waltz in here and expect me to just understand that you're flying off to Russia to put a death-satellite in orbit so you can be buddies with them again I find myself asking how you can be so damned selfish! You put possibly more than your own life at risk and it doesn't even enter into your thinking. It's the same reason why Genocide isn't dead by now either, you do things your own damn way with your own codes and fuck everybody else."

The Soviet Superwoman wiped a few budding tears out of the corners of her eyes with a shaking hand. "I cannot believe you would spit in my face like that. I have a chance to finally see my home again and you would say such things..."

"Well I had a chance to live without fear of exploding over the city and you took that away from me."

Olga's features hardened and she took a few steps away from Maia, holding up her hands. "I do not know why I bothered to come back here in the first place. I see now it was a mistake."

"Well at least you're consistent." Walkiria stated matter-of-factly.

The Soviet Superwoman turned from her, her dark features smoldering with anger. Without another word she stalked out of the room. Maia wanted to reach out and stop her, but she didn't. At the sound of the roof-top exit slamming closed Maia rubbed her eyes and leaned against the side of the door jam. The fight had escalated far more than she had wanted it to.

The red-haired American took several slow breaths as she struggled to get her anger under control. For some reason her emotions seemed more volatile than usual. Maia strode over to the breakfast nook and picked up her red glasses. Slipping them on, she activated the comm-link with the Yoyodyne Industries Artificial Intelligence.

“Maia, how are you? What can I …” The A.I.’s voice went silent for a moment. “Maia, is everything alright? Your energy profile is strange.”

“I am fine O.D.I.N. Olga and I just had a bad fight. A really bad one.”

“I’m sorry to hear that, is there anything I can do to help?”

“Yeah, find a cure for terminal naivety,” Maia said bitterly.

“I am not sure I understand,” O.D.I.N. replied, its artificial voice taking a questioning tone.

“Nevermind. Look, I need you to gather everything you find on a Russian named Nikola Myshkin. And also any about a recent Soviet satellite launch. I think my wife is once again going down the primrose path towards disaster, and we need to figure out the exact nature of the threat!”

“Alright, just calm down Maia,” the A.I. cautioned.

“Just find that information, before Olga creates another international incident! Walkiria out!” Maia said with finality as she closed the comm-link connection. “With luck I can find some evidence to talk Olga out of this foolishness,” she muttered to herself as she looked out the bay windows in the direction Olga had departed.

To be continued...

Walkiria is just over reacting, Soviet Superwoman will be just fine. Don't blame Walkiria, red heads tend to be fiery.

*Rubs hands together* Wow, this was an interesting spout and I see a lot of varied points on both sides.

Walkiria- I would think, given her condition and experiences, that she would learn and live by this phrase, "Power Corrupts." It is very easy to go over the line between good and evil if one person has enough power to shape what he/she could with a flick of her wrist. Olga is no exception to having make bad decisions and she was right to give up the power when she had a chance. Given the reverse situation, I believe that Walkiria would do the same thing. Also, as terms with the government it is very easy for government, especially Russia, to hide true meanings and give simple sentences just to complete their own ends. Again, had Walkiria had the tables turned on her and she was in the same picture with the US Military she would do anything and everything to get back into neutral territory at least and to be in good favors with the Military.

Soviet Superwoman- On her side she kind of chewed this dish without asking how they made the meal. Maia was right to Olga being too quick to accept what the Soviets were offering without at least researching what this satellite is or what the Russian's long term plan was. I personally see this whole Satellite thing as a trap because of my given reasons: a) Nikola never stated about having discussed this with other governments to gain their support and help. b) Nikola could never give any proof that he could back up what he was saying about the benefits (at least what I read), so it seems very easy to turn the tables and reveal the pistol underneath to strong arm Olga. c) Out of the number of people to ask including the Guardians and the Governments he picked the one person who accidently started something with the Russians. Call me crazy but it seems all too convenient that Nikola came like he did with the offer in hand.

Sorry, but this sounded like a side weighing story so I would like to insert my points. Very good story overall and I can't wait to see what happens next!

That’s right, Maia! Show her who wears the pants in this relationship… I say as I realize that Maia is even further from wearing pants than Olga is… well, you know what I mean.

A nice bit of drama is on display here, and while I, from atop my conservative white male Olympus, am looking down my nose upon it all, your writing does make me invested in this international-yet-domestic conflict.

The sad thing about this story is that neither of them is wrong.

I think Maia might be right about Nikola is playing a little bit on Olga's need of belonging, but Olga is also right to feel a need to help.

I really hope that the fluctuations in Maia's body are actually due to her altered emotional state, rather than some kind of manipulation.

Olga and Maia's first real fight as a married couple. It's not easy. Just hope Olga's not getting in over her head. Her thinking and discernment is similar to Superman.

She may not have voiced them in the best way, but Maia does bring up some good points. Not sure I agree with her about messing around with things while Olga was all-powerful, but then again I'm not the one with the energy body that could go critical at any time.

But yeah, seems to me like something's heightening Maia's aggression to try and cause a rift between her and Olga (I'm still suspicious of that guy touching them at Hyper-Con), and I wouldn't be surprised if that satellite was designed to somehow bring Olga under Russian control either. Or kill/imprison her, but the former would be more likely lead to a fight between her and Maia.

Something wrong with Maia's energy signature? Am I the only one who thinks that's a bad thing combined with the fact that the fight, while honest concerns on both their parts, probably wouldn't have been something that they would have had a knock down drag out about? Just a hunch.

If Olga is going to learn whether or not she was wise to trust Nikola, then she will have to experience it herself. It won't be easy though.

Maia might regret saying those things to Olga but she might be right about Nikola. I don't think the satellite is a weapon per se but with maias ion energy seeming ;different; it might be a coincidence.

Very good chapter My Dear

Hmm... I dunno, I want to buy into that conflict, but something about it seemed forced... I am half-suspecting that there's something influencing Maia there, but I honestly think their relationship is stronger than that even with their differences.

Well, even the best relationship has its cracks. Granted the central players in said relationship normally don't have the power to tear a hull of a battleship apart wit their bare hands. *Readies the bomb shelter.*
