Book I: Portal Of God

Olga's mind reeled as she traveled further and further away from the spiraling darkness that was the black hole, now David's prison. She had near limitless power at her disposal and the longer she was in contact with the Wave, the easier it became to concentrate and tap into the very fabric of creation. A smile crept across her youthful face and her heart leapt in her chest. David had never used his powers for good. He had wrestled with the darker side of his personality for so long that it took everything he had to bury Concussion and keep him in check. Olga didn't have any multiple-personality disorders or a darker side to her. All of the power she could now wield would be used for one purpose and one purpose only: to do good. Great things would be accomplished, things she could have never done before despite the already formidable powers she had already possessed. Olga closed her eyes and held her arms wide out to her sides as she turned in circles, shooting through space at speeds she could never have imagined possible. Genocide and her Fourth Reich would be the first ones on her list to bring to justice. Ilsa Hauppman had gone free for too long, the cries of her countless victims would no longer be in vain. Olga would descend upon her and her Nazi ilk with the fury of a goddess. She would personally defeat Ilsa in hand to hand combat, shatter the morale and resolve of her fanatic forces before draining the elixirs and serums out of the Nazi war criminal's blood completely. Then she could round up the others, Ilsa's elite guards, the Iron Chancellor and the like with ease. Never again would the Reich pose a threat to her adopted world.

After that she would deal with the other criminals of Angel Falls and the world. Ultrawoman, Twisted Savant, Dark Star, Kim Paler...all of them and more would be hunted down and brought to justice, locked away powerless in Tartarus prison for all time. They would all have their days in court and be found guilty, of that Olga had no doubt. The crimes against humanity they had collectively committed were too numerous and terrible to count. It would leave herself and the other Guardians free to pursue problems like world hunger and homelessness without constantly having a tin-Hitler pop up with insane dreams of global conquest.

Global conquest...the Chtranqua.

The Soviet Superwoman stopped spinning through space and came to a halt. Her hands clenched into tight balls as she began to imagine what she could do to those alien bastards and her blue eyes closed shut. No longer restrained by time or even locked into this dimension, she could return to her homeland and stop their invasion before it began. She could warp to their home-world and make them pay for all the planets they had consumed in their war machine...make them pay for all the millions of lives they had taken in the Soviet Union. They had come to her world to inspire terror and fear and she would make sure to return the favor upon them before they had the opportunity. No longer would the Chtranqua be the bane of the galaxy, hunting down worlds for their resources and using them up like batteries. They would be ground under heel and brought to justice. Without her new-found powers she had caused them crippling losses and now...now they would pay for what they had done.

Sajmište.

The thought of that dark and horrible place entered her mind like a bad dreams. It's cloying smells...the scents of the body devouring itself in hunger, the smell of rotting and burning human remains. The nightmarish visions. Ilsa Hauppman was just a product of the Nazi Reich. Why go through all the trouble to destroy the Fourth Reich when all she had to do was destroy the previous one. She knew the names of it's key players and even where they lived, where they grew up, where they went to school...Himmler, Goering, Heydrich...Adolf Hitler. Would the lives of a handful of pathetic, evil men equal the sixty million that died in the madness of their reign? All she would have to do is go back and eliminate them all from ever being in any position of power. All the horrors of the Great Patriotic War would be gone forever. She would be able to grow up and live a normal, healthy life with her family...her mother and father...Tatiyana...little Vassily. He would get to grow up, get to fall in love, get to do and create great things...not die at the hands of Hitler's murderers. if she wanted to she could even go back and stop that man from stabbing her mother...

Olga's eyes flew open. No. This was wrong. That moment in time, no matter how horrible it was, had defined her for the rest of her life. It was then that she had decided to protect the weak and stand up for those who couldn't stand up for themselves. Even her mother, despite the injury she suffered, proved her resolve after that with how she dealt with it. The ideas she was toying with now...changing the past, making things right that had once been wrong...they were all the ramblings of the Soviet Valkyrie, a woman so determined to change the past that she lost sight of who and what she was. A woman who would spill innocent blood for the chance to be with her wife. A woman that she could so easily become. A path that was a circle, round and round. Olga thought back on her conversation with her dark, alternate self as if it was yesterday...

"It is so easy for you to judge me, is it not Olga," The Valkyrie had said, "not having seen what I have seen. To look on you I was so damned naive and so damned full of ideals. I wish I could have stayed like that, wrapped up in my own ignorance forever, but it is not to be. Just because my timeline is over does not mean the future will be any easier on you. You will have to make the hard choices yourself and live with your mistakes."

"That is what it is like every day for all of us." she had replied calmly, "No-one knows what is in store for us in this life. All we can do is strive to do our best each and every day and to make each moment count. That is all I have ever done. I have made poor decisions and have felt terrible regrets...you know this more than anyone, but I would not change any of it. All of my choices have led me to where I am right now, right here."

The Soviet Superwoman now knew exactly what she had to do and so, returned home in a flash of light.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Olga arrived back on the streets of Angel Falls, near where she had originally disappeared with David. The Guardians had returned to helping law enforcement and rescue personnel by and large. Olga breathed a sigh of relief in the fact that Aria was no longer here. She would have to talk with the girl, but now was not the time or the place. Gordon was here, sitting on the ground near the scorched outline of Polygirl. He looked up at her with vacant, red-rimmed eyes. Olga's heart sank as she saw the expression of grief on his face. Seeing her Маленький Брат like that...Paulina had meant the whole world to him and now she was gone.

"Please Olga...please tell me there is something you can do...bring her back to me." he pleaded with the caped woman.

The Russian heroine concentrated for a moment. Concussion had done his job all too well. He had destroyed Poly at the molecular level, disintegrating her into nothing more than a handful of ash. Olga's mastery of the Wave wasn't complex or comprehensive enough yet to undo that kind of systematic destruction of a human being. In order to make things right she would have to go backwards in time and pull Poly to the present or warn her of her impending fate, both of which she was no longer prepared to do. Altering the past was not a mistake she was ever going to make. The Valkyrie had taught her that truth. In altering her past, she had opened the door for a more horrific, nightmarish future. Slowly Olga shook her head from side to side, her own eyes filling up with stinging tears.

"I am so sorry Gordon...I cannot repair the damage that..."

"I don't think I have anything that could fix that mess either honestly..." came a familiar voice. Olga spun around towards the entrance to the Stranger building as did Gordon. Standing there, looking just as she always did was Polygirl. Raging Bull lived up to his name again, practically knocking the Soviet Superwoman off her feet as he he rushed past her to get to the petite woman. For a moment only he hesitated as if he was unsure exactly what had happened to bring her back to him. Then he grabbed her in his arms and held her tight against his chest, smiling wider that a child on his birthday. Poly returned his smile and held onto him with all four of her arms. He leaned forward and began kissing her, his tears changing from sorrow to incredible joy.

"Why didn't you tell me?" he laughed as he continued to hold her close.

"I thought making a duplicate might be prudent. I estimated my odds of surviving an encounter with Concussion at only 3,720 to 1. I figured a good contingency might be to..."

"Just shut up and kiss me!" he exclaimed as he pulled her tight into a long, deep kiss.

Olga was crying tears of joy as well. Everything was almost back to normal. There was only one last thing to do. The Soviet Superwoman concentrated and eliminated all knowledge of the Wave from the planet. Polygirl's hand-held device lay shattered and now she no longer knew what to look for even if she had someone passed the information it gathered to a back-up of some kind. Aria, the other Guardians...they would have no memory of the Wave of Existence. It was simply too powerful, too dangerous a thing for any mortal to have access to. With David gone, so too would be the source of his knowledge and powers...which also included her own link to the Wave. It was a terrible decision, but ultimately she knew it would corrupt even her best intentions. To wipe out all crime, to make the Earth an Eden for example, would see man stagnate. Bad things were necessary as they define who we are and will become just as much as the good things define us. So with a thought, Olga cast her powers aside and became once again, only the Soviet Superwoman.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Upon returning home sometime later, Olga quickly located a pen and jotted down a note to Maia on a sheet from the pad that they used to keep track of groceries they needed. She had seen a fleeting image while she was imbued with the Wave's energies, a scene from a possible future that still haunted her. A dark and terrible vision that she was unsure how long she would remember since she had given up the near-omniscient powers. Olga finished the cryptic note detailing the scene with a set of coordinates at the bottom and sealed it up, writing her Maia's name on the front with a flourish. She then took the note and placed it with her spare costumes and personal effects. When the time would come, Maia would find it there waiting for her.
