Book I: Portal Of God

David barely had time to wheel around at the sound of the voice before a powerful blast of pure mental energy slamming directly into his chest and sent him sprawling to the streets. He rolled over twice before coming up on his hands and knees, his knuckles ripped and torn from the asphalt. His face turned towards his attacker and his lips split wide into a feral grin. The Soviet Superwoman was on her feet and walking towards him slowly, the broken and cracked pavement crunching under her black leather boots. The big woman was angry...more angry than he had seen her in a long time. Not since her last battle with Ultrawoman, what seemed like an eternity ago now. Polygirl must have given her powers to Olga right before she was reduced to dust, the only would-be hero that was inside the shield. Fucking bitch! Olga would have all of his powers in addition to her own. He coughed and placing his hands on his knee, picked himself up from the ground quickly, turning to face the Russian as she approached him.

"What is this, amateur night? First Po..."

Another blast smashed into him, the red energy originating from a halo around her head. Concussion met that beam with one of his own, in a move very similar to the assault Polygirl had leveled at him. As he did so, Olga flashed towards him with a burst of super-speed and drove both of her fists upward in a powerful haymaker. David yelped in surprise and pain as his head was bashed up and to the right, knocking him off his feet and back down onto the sidewalk. Several of his teeth landed nearby, coated in blood.

"Never say her name again." Olga snarled before blasting him in the side. Concussion ripped along the ground with the blast, cutting a volleyball like swath through the pavement before colliding with a parked car several yards away.

Concussion growled as he once again picked himself up off the ground, coughing and sputtering. His hand shot immediately to his mouth and his blood. His blood. The crimson stains on his shaking fingers brought a new thought into his head. Doubt. He was already weakened from his battle with Polygirl and her attempt to scramble his brain and now this...a super-human meta suddenly imbued with his own powers attacking him. He wasn't sure he could defeat her in his condition and even worse he could feel his ability to concentrate on the barrier weakening. Their pet mage had been steadily assaulting it the entire time with her magiks, looking for something to exploit and bring it down. Against the combined might of the Guardians he knew he had little chance. Even with all his powers, he would be brought down under such an onslaught. As he watched Olga walking towards him, she stumbled and took hold of her head with a gloved hand. The smirk returned to his face. Like Poly, she was having trouble processing all the information, all the power that the Wave granted. Despite her rage and power, she was still just a mewling quim! It was his opportunity! He would escape this situation and come back when he was healed, when he was strong again. Then he would simply kill them all one by one, at his leisure. With that satisfying thought, Concussion teleported away.

Olga watched as he suddenly disappeared, cursing under her breath. She was having incredible difficulty blocking out the torrent of power that the Wave of Existence was filling her very being with. Rage...anger at what Concussion had done to her city and to her friends had keep her as focused as she could, but it was a lot like holding the reigns on a wild stallion that was trying to throw you to the ground, bucking and leaping in all directions. Polygirl. Tears welled up the corners of the caped woman's sapphire eyes at the thought of her dead friend. Poly had tried to appeal to David's humanity, and when that failed she gave her life so that she would have this chance to finally defeat him and now he had once again managed to slip away and evade justice. Not this time. Not again. The Soviet Superwoman ground her teeth together and rolled her eyes back into her head. David got his powers from the same place she was tapped into now, like both of them holding the ends of the same piece of string. If she could follow that string along it's length so to speak, she could find where he was...or so she hoped. Olga could feel her consciousness reaching out across the universe to find where he had gone to.

Almost immediately her eyes flew open. She knew exactly where he was and in a flash, she went there to intercept him.

For a moment, she was disoriented upon her arrival. Her eyes opened wide in panic as the air was suddenly forced violently out of her lungs. Olga found herself in space, deep space. Quickly she thought for a moment and changed her physiology so that she was able to survive in that harsh, cold environment, something she couldn't have done under normal circumstances. Regaing her breath and her bearings, she discovered she was in orbit near Veloria, Ultrawoman's home-world, millions of light years from the Earth. Despite the fact she had never seen it, or even knew where it was, she somehow knew that was the planet below her. David was approaching a massive Velorian space station when she arrived, perhaps hoping for temporary sanctuary. Maybe he was planning on leading an invasion force to Earth in an attempt at revenge, or perhaps he was simply thinking of Ultrawoman at the time he teleported away. Regardless, she could see his stiffen up and turn to face her as she made her way across the blanket of stars towards him, basking in the violet hue of the alien planet. He shook his head from side to side, both in surprise and fury.

"There's only one way this can end Olga!" David's cruel voice resonated in her head, "Are you prepared to do it, because I assure you I am!"

Concussion let out a terrible psychic bellow before unleashing a powerful energy blast at her. Olga let out a war-like cry to match his own and released her great scarlet beam of energy. The two ribbons of mental power crashed into each other, lighting up the horizon over Veloria. For what seemed like an eternity, the two beams were equally matched, neither one more powerful than the other...but soon Olga's red energy beam began to overtake the weakened Concussion. He howled with rage, cursed, swore, gnashing his teeth wide eyed as the red beam slowly crept it's way towards him, reducing his own energy beam as it came for him. Without warning, David's energy suddenly seemed to exhaust itself and her blast punched into him full force, causing a massive explosion of crimson light.

When the glow finally subsided and Olga could see again, David was floating in space, moaning softly. His clothing was ripped and burned and his vital signs were very weak. Unsure of whether his powers functioned with him unconscious, and not willing to chance it, Olga concentrated and whisked them both back to Angel Falls.

As they arrived back, only a few feet from where they had been previously, David took hold of her shoulder. His eyes met hers for a moment and she could see that the malice and fire had gone out of them. In their place was great sorrow, a profound sadness and sense of loss. Concussion had been defeated and only David remained, himself once again.

"Olga..." he spoke in a whispered voice, his throat raspy, "I'm so sorry...I'm sorry...I never meant to kill anyone...Paulina...oh God..."

"It was not you David, it was him. Concussion is to blame." Olga said in a soft voice, "Poly knew that. She knew there is good is you."

David's grip on her shoulder grew stronger as he leaned towards her face to speak. "Please Olga...kill me now...don't let him win. Don't give him the chance to return. Tell Aria you had no choice...tell her that I love her and wanted to die as David and not as a monster."

The tears returned to Olga's face. "Is there no way to break your link with the Wave?"

He shook his head slowly from side to side. "Not for me...Concussion will never let me break with the Wave. I am tied to it for as long as I live."

The Soviet Superwoman raised her gloved hand to gently caress the side of his face. "I cannot kill you my friend, but I will make certain that Concussion never again causes harm or haunts your dreams. You will sleep, in eternal happiness far from where anyone will ever find you."

David smiled, completely at peace for the first time in his life and closed his eyes. "Thank you Olga."

The tall, Russian woman closed her eyes as well, using her new-found powers to place the now unconscious David in a state of stasis, from which he could not voluntarily wake himself. As his body went limp she turned and took a few steps before realizing that the Guardians had moved in and were watching her. Aria was here as well, having pushed her way past General Bardak. The silvery haired girl was shaking her head from side to side slowly, her expression one of disbelief and rising concern.

"Where are you taking him Olga?" she squeaked out in an emotion-filled voice.

"Somewhere he can no longer harm others or himself."

"No!" Aria yelled at the larger woman, "There is still good in him Olga, you know that! You know that! You can't just leave him somewhere like that!"

"And I cannot risk letting him go because Concussion will always be there as well. He understood this. He is too dangerous Aria, look what he did to Poly." Olga replied, her own voice cracking.

Aria shook her head again more violently, falling to her knees like a puppet whose strings had been cut. "Please Olga...I'm begging you. I love him! I can help him! When we are together I'm the only thing David can use to keep him at bay!"

The Soviet Superwoman merely shook her own head slowly in response. "I am sorry Aria. I know that he truly loved you and that is why we must do this."

Rising to her feet, the young woman suddenly drew her blade from it's sheath with a hissing sound and rushed at the amazonian woman. Before she could reach her, both Olga and David were gone, teleporting somewhere far away from Angel Falls. Aria felt her sword slip from her grasp to the ground and let out an anguished cry before dropping back to her knees again, her hands cupping her face in sorrow. Tears streamed down her hot, flush face as her lips quivered. She looked up with glistening, stinging eyes towards the sun and did her best to remain strong. Part of her knew that Olga was right, that this was the only way to ever stop Concussion short of killing David. The other part of her still wanted to be with him forever.

Olga watched as she carried David's serene body to the edge of the black hole's event horizon, the most destructive force in all of nature from which not even light could escape. It was awe-inspiring, terrifying and yet strangely beautiful in a way. For a long while she just hovered there in space, finally looking down at David's face. He looked so at peace, for the first time in his entire life. A part of her hesitated. Was she doing the right? Could he, over time gain dominion over the Hyde aspect of his personality. The Soviet woman bit her lip and looked into the swirling vortex of darkness in front of her. Concussion was like that...a powerful, primal force that couldn't be contained or controlled. He would escape again, break the shackles David put on his mind and what then? Another one of her friends would have to make the ultimate sacrifice to end it? How many innocent people would pay the price a second time or a third time? Concussion wasn't like any other criminal or madman on Earth that could be stopped and detained and imprisoned. He was too dangerous and too powerful. Olga swallowed and decided to act while her resolve was this strong. She let go of his body and gave him a gentle push away from her and towards the singularity. There was a strange optical illusion as he made contact with the black hole, as if he was physically stretching outward like a piece of spaghetti and then he was gone, consumed by the rolling darkness.

Olga crossed herself and issued a silent prayer before whispering into the vortex. "Dream my friend and may all your dreams be pleasant ones."

Then the Soviet super-soldier turned her eyes and looked at the point in the cosmos where she knew the Earth was and thought to herself: "There is still so much more work to be done..."

I am not sure I understand. How they know he is having "sweet dreams" and how do they know he cannot "omnipotently" escape? what makes them have that certainty? There are some black hole manipulators in AF.
